The Grand Panorama of London from the Thames ...
LONDON ACROSS THE THAMES
A fascinating view of the River Thames, a woodcut panorama of London looking northwards across the Thames, extending from the newly-built Houses of Parliament to the Tower of London and St Katharine’s Docks. The teeming nature of the watercraft on the Thames is indicative of its importance as a thoroughfare through London.
The panorama was engraved by Henry Vizetelly co-founder of the Pictorial Times, a competitor to the recently established Illustrated London News. Although priced at 1sh. 6d., this embossed on the cover, the preliminary text announces that “This Remarkable Engraving Twelve Feet in Length may be taken as a Specimen of the Gifts Presented without Charge to the Subscribers to the Pictorial Times …“.
