Dionysius Periegetes was a traveller in the Mediterranean world, active in about 130 A.D. He compiled a description of the Roman ‘oecumene’, written in Greek hexameter verse. Dionysius’ text was subsequently translated by Priscian of Caesarea in the sixth century, while printed editions, with commentary, appeared from 1478 onwards. The ‘Periegesis’ proved to be a popular text for schools much reprinted, for example in England, with several editions illustrated with map or maps, as here.

The maps include pairs of maps of the world, Europe, Asia and Africa, separate maps of North and South America and the British Isles.

Provenance: Macclesfield Collection, with the North Library bookplate.
