A naive but striking caricature of three American types, depicted in a style evocative of Regency satirical prints. The figures, all of whom are wearing broad brimmed tan hats and smoking long thin pipes, are labelled “1. A Merchant / 2. A Judge / 3. A Colonel”. Though the drawing echoes the composition of a satire, there is no clear butt to the joke, and as such this is probably an observational sketch by a British traveller to America, recording the style of dress of these three “Yankee” types.
