Romaine is identified by Alan Clodd as Romaine Brooks, later to be one half of the celebrated Sapphic partnership with Nathalie Clifford Barney. In 1905, she had only recently come out fully, also having justly received her substantial inheritance. The Happy Hypocrite first appeared in Volume XI of The Yellow Book in October, 1896. The Happy Hypocrite tells the story of a man who deceives a woman with a mask in order to marry her. The book was published by John Lane at The Bodily Head(English publishing house, founded in 1887 and existing as an independent entity until the 1970s. April 2008, it was revived as an adult non-fiction imprint), in New York City and in London in 1897. In 1900 the story was produced as a stage show.
