Hero and Leander.

A FINE COPY OF RICKETTS' FINE BOOK

Illustrated with seven wood engravings by Ricketts and Shannon. First edition, one of 220 copies. 8vo. Original publisher’s full vellum binding gilt-stamped by Ricketts. London and Edinburgh, Elkin Matthews and John Lane, printed at the Ballantyne Press, 1894.

£3,000.00

Near fine, very minor spots of rubbing to covers, pale-coloured spotting to pages 1-4, 37, 44-5, and 52, but otherwise remarkably clean and bright, with none of the page toning which often affects the edition. Bookplates of Barry Humphries, Minnie Caroline Bell and Rainforth Armitage Walker, editor of several collected editions of Beardsley’s drawings.

A precursor to the Vale Press, this established many of the features that were to be consistent through the press’s life: the principal difference is the luxurious binding, which is something of a modest masterpiece. Van Capelleveen, A6; Nelson, BH, 1894.13/86.
