Modest signs of handling to the jacket, and corners no longer completely crisp, but a sound copy, inscribed “For Jane, Because you asked. Don’t please, hold it against me. Love - Al. 30 Jane 1982.” Alvarez was a near neighbour to the Cornwells and a fairly close friend - Sisman notes his exceptionally sympathetic review of Smiley’s People, in contrast to a luke-warm reception from much of the press.
