BURNABY (Mrs. Fred [Elizabeth]).
The High Alps in Winter;

Married to the famous Capt. Fred Burnaby (of Ride to Khiva fame) at the age of seventeen following her first London Season, Elizabeth Hawkins-Whitshed’s life was transformed by a trip to Chamonix in 1881. Prescribed mountain air as an aide restorative for her poor health, Mrs. Burnaby progressed from mule rides along the lower slopes to a double ascent of Mont Blanc in one season. She dedicated her life thereafter to proving that one could be both a Lady and a Mountaineer, scandalising her family.
