Hidaka Chotaro (1883-1926) was born into a wealthy family in Higashiura Village in Aichi Prefecture. He started photography while still at High School aged 17. In 1912 he founded the Aiyu Photography Club in Nagoya together with Ohashi Matsutaro, Sano Shiei, and Yamamoto Goro. They were affiliated to the Tokyo Photographic Research Society and participated in their annual exhibition. The present large format photograph is a superb example of the geijutsu shashin (artistic photography) style of which he was a chief proponent.
