Inscribed by the author on the half title to “My Dolores”. Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna was a Chilean writer and politician of Irish and Basque descent. He was raised in Santiago, where he wrote for La Tribuna newspaper. He escaped captivity after participating in Pedro Urriola’s attempted revolution in 1851 by disguising as a woman and fleeing to the United States. He lived in exile for five years, visiting Europe in this time, and ultimately returned to Santiago where he qualified as a lawyer and founded a newspaper. He would go on to have a prolific career as writer and journalist, both in and out of exile. He wrote for many newspapers, including El Mercurio, by whom the present work of history is published.
