Madame de Genlis (1746-1830) was born in Champércy in the Saôn-et-Loire region of France. As a teenager, she was a virtuoso harpist and became a prolific writer for children. She served as governess to the children of Phillip, duke d’Chartres (the son of the duke d’Orleans), and they enjoyed an affair which lasted nineteen years. They’re love letters were later published, and she is now best known for her diaries.
