Low’s work is the first detailed history of the Indian Navy, which operated for 250 years before its responsibilites were assumed by the Royal Navy. Today it remains the standard work on the subject. It is a work of particular relevance to Arabia, as it details both the Indian Navy’s expeditions against the Joasami and has the best account of the surveying expeditions which mapped the coastline of Arabia, both in the Gulf and in the Red Sea.
