The first English translation of Heidegger’s major lecture course on the work of the German poet and philosopher Friedrich Holderlin, originally delivered at the University of Freiburg in 1942 and first published posthumously in German in 1984.

Centring upon a reading of a single poem by Holderlin, ‘The Ister’, the lectures are Heidegger’s most sustained engagement with the ‘essence’ of politics. The text is impossible to separate from the context in which it was composed, at the height of the Second World War and during Heidegger’s deeply controversial tenure as Rector of University of Freiburg.
