Although born and raised just outside of Buenos Aires, ill health prevented Hudson from fulfilling his dream of travelling to Patagonia until he was fifty. He came to prominence with the publication of The Naturalist in La Plata in 1892 and had intended to further pursue ornithology on this trip; however, an accident with a gun forced Hudson to spend much of this time resting. Idle Days in Patagonia is a mostly reflective account of this time. Spence, 613.
