Having completed the first crossing of Africa by car in 1909, Graetz returned in 1911 to tackle it by motorboat. Out of necessity, his route was divided into two stages. The first took him along the Shire, Chambesi and Luapula rivers. The second followed the Congo river where the border between Congo and Zambia now stands.
