A collection bringing together Liberal Party publications for the year 1904, containing two rare Churchill items published in the same year in which he had crossed the floor of the House of Commons on 31 May 1904, abandoning the Conservative government to join the opposition Liberals, with Churchill remaining a Liberal party member until March 1924.
The first item, ‘The Issue at Stake’, is a pamphlet gathering speeches delivered by Churchill in Manchester alongside the Liberal statesman John Morley, in which they both attacked the Conservative Party for its opposition to Free Trade. The present collected issue is distinguished by the number ‘10’ stamped at the head of the front cover.
The second item, a 2pp. leaflet titled ‘Winston Churchill on the Aliens Bill’, in which Churchill outlined his opposition to what ultimately became the Aliens Act of 1905 which granted the Home Secretary control over matters concerning nationality, introducing immigration controls and registrations for the first time in Britain.
The remaining contents gathered in the volume offer an excellent window into political life and Liberal Party activity during the year 1904.
Spine faded and rather rubbed, contents generally clean, a very good copy.
