Fynes Moryson (1565/6-1630) was a traveller and writer from Lincolnshire. After graduating he toured Europe studying in various universities, spending time in Germany, Prague, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Poland, Moravia, Austria, Italy, Turkey and Jerusalem, as well as travelling extensively in the British Isles. In 1606 he began work on a chronicle the countries he had visited, which ended up published a decade later as the present work. “The three folios of An Itinerary form what are really three distinct works. Part one … is a detailed journal of Moryson’s travels in Europe and the Near East. Part two centres on a history of the Nine Year’s War, using copies of official correspondence and state documents to illustrate the campaign form Blount’s perspective … Part three … consists of essays on the value and difficulties of travel, and on geography and national differences” (ODNB).
