The eldest of the children of William IV and the actress Mrs. Jordan, Fitzclarence carried despatches from India to England in 1817/1818. His narrative provides details not only of the activities of the East India Company, but perhaps more importantly, gives information on both Salt and Belzoni in Egypt, who joined him on an expedition to the Pyramids. In later life Fitzclarence became president of the Royal Asiatic Society.Blackmer, 597; Ibrahim-Hilmy I, 233; Abbey (Travel), 519.
