CONOLLY (Lieut. Arthur).
Journey to the North of India, overland from England, through Russia, Persia and Affghaunistaun.

Rare. This copy is inscribed by the author, who is best known for coining the phrase “The Great Game”.

Whilst in England on sick leave from his Indian cavalry regiment in 1829, Conolly obtained permission to travel back to India through Central Asia. Leaving London on 10th August that same year he preceded to St. Petersburg, where he spent a month, before journeying to Tiflis, Tehran and Astrabad. Leaving the latter in April 1830 disguised as a native merchant with a good stock of furs, Conolly aimed to reach Khiva, however, the caravan which he had joined was attacked and he was taken prisoner. After several days in which his life hung in the balance he was released and returned to Astrabad from whence he continued his journey to India via Candahar and Scinde, reaching the frontier in January, 1831 (DNB).
