HOBHOUSE (J.C.).
A Journey through Albania, and other Provinces of Turkey in Europe and Asia, to Constantinople, during the Years 1809 and 1810.
Hobhouse made this journey, as is well known, with Lord Byron, and it is an important source for that period of the latter’s life as well as the intellectual movement leading up to the Greek insurrection. Hobhouse later had a long political career, but remained close to Byron, travelling with him to Italy and contributing notes to the Fourth Canto of Childe Harold.
The beautiful plates are derived from a variety of sources, but especially from a manuscript purchased by the author in Turkey. The larger views, however, appear to have been the work of a Bavarian, Baron Linckh, who worked with Stackelberg and others.
