KIPLING (Rudyard).
Just So Stories For Little Children.
WITH THE RARE DUST JACKET
Kipling’s famous collection of 12 stories and 12 poems including ‘How the Camel Got His Hump’ and ‘How the Leopard Got His Spots’, complete with the extremely rare and fragile original pictorial dust jacket.
The Chinese white pigment used for the decorative blocking on the first issue binding famously tended to flake off and a new ink was used for the more commonly encountered second issue.
Faint partial offsetting to endpapers, small bookseller’s label to front pastedown, just a hint of faint spotting to fore-edge of text block, a few occasional instances of minor thumb-marking to blank fore-margins, contents otherwise generally clean and unmarked; the cloth remains bright with only minor shelf wear to tips of spine and corners, front cover only slightly bowed; the rare dust jacket is rather worn with various closed tears and nicks to extremities, substantial portion of loss at head of spine panel with loss of two characters in title with small triangular 1x1cm loss towards the middle portion of spine, two longer closed tears from head of front and rear panels with discreet repairs to verso, traces of earlier repairs to verso at spine ends and corners, with an endearing albeit somewhat misguided early inscription in black ink to the front panel: “This is The first edition of [Just So Stories] Dad went to great trouble to get it therefore keep carefully.”
