Signature on the title “Mary Burton 1769”. Inscription on the front flyleaf: “The Gift of Mary Barton to Miss Mary Mauleverer her Goddaughter- on her Death - The above Mary Burton was Eldest Daughter to John Fawsitt Esqr. of Hull.”

Mary Fawsitt was a daughter of John Fawsitt of Walkington Hall, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire. She married Robert Burton, merchant of Hull in 1748, later of Hotham Hall, near Beverley; she died without issue in 1802. Mary Mauleverer was probably the spinster and heiress of Timothy Mauleverer (d. 1784), of Arnclifte Hall, Ingleby Arncliffe, North Yorkshire (1766-1833).
