[Bonaparte (Joseph)].
King Joe disposing of his Spanish crown !!!
"WILL NO ONE BID FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL CROWN"
Rare. Not in the British Museum. There is an example in the Library of Congress.
Napoleon’s elder brother Joseph, who had recently been installed as King of Spain, is shown as an auctioneer offering his crown to representatives from various countries including an English farmer who calls out, “I’ll give thee two & sixpence for it just for the fun of the thing”
Joseph Bonaparte was installed as the King of Spain in 1808 after Napoleon had persuaded the reigning Spanish monarch, Ferdinand VII, to stand aside and abdicate. Joseph Bonaparte and the French occupation were deeply unpopular in Spain and Joseph was forced to abdicate after the French defeat at the Battle of Vitoria in May 1813.
