A fine (unread) copy, with Christopher Sinclair-Stevenson’s card addressed to David Cornwell sending the book “You will remember Night of Wenceslas. I thought you’d like a proof of Lionel Davidson’s new book, after a very long gap. I don’t think he’s lost his cunning.” This thriller, written after a 16-year career hiatus, was his last book, and is considered something of a hidden gem: Philip Pullman lends his approval – “the best thriller I’ve ever read” – to the current paperback edition, as does The Spectator which compares it to “The Silence of the Lambs, Casino Royale, and Smiley’s People.” See the foreword to this catalogue for Nicholas Shakespeare’s description of it as “exceptional”.
