A rare opportunity to see a side-by-side view of the same book, printed in two different methods.
To illustrate this book Sekino carved woodblocks by hand. Within the edition of 95, he printed some as rubbings from the original woodblock while others were printed normally from the same blocks, with hand colouring applied after. We are pleased to offer both versions together as a set.
Muramatsu Ei (1923-2008), a scholar of Japanese and Chinese literature, had published a novel titled Kosetsu shiki in 1968 with cover and illustrations by Sekino. The book references the Chinese classic Shiji, known in English as the Records of the Grand Historian, written by Sima Qian in the 1st–2nd century BC. The present title is a separate edition, with Sekino’s illustrations for Muramatsu’s novel.
