£3,000.00

The second printed atlas of Africa, first published in 1656.

This copy is without a date on the title-page, but the maps have plate numbers inserted, placing it after the 1662 (second) edition. The title bears the imprint ‘… A Paris, chez l’autheur, rue S. Iacques, à l’Esperance …’, Mariette’s shop address.

The eighteen maps include one of the continent as a whole, fourteen regional maps (two on one sheet) including southern Africa, and maps of Madagascar, the Cape Verde Island, the Canaries and Malta.

Rare. Pastoureau records four institutional locations, but the British Library copy is an error.
