A good copy of this classic piece of narrative on East Africa, in which Burton describes his journey from Pemba and Zanzibar to the western shore of Lake Tanganyika. Amongst his party was John Hanning Speke who Burton attempts to discredit from the outset, by stating in the Preface that he was no more than a subordinate, never having held the position of surveyor as he claimed on his return to England. Penzer, p65/66.
