[LINCOLN UNIVERSITY] & FOSTER (R.B.)
To the Late Officers of the 62nd Reg't, USCI ...

An excellent piece of social and military history, this apparently unrecorded circular to former officers of the 62nd US Colored Infantry, provides updates on each of their lives since the close of the Civil War.

Founded in 1866, Lincoln University, was the initiative of veterans of the 62nd and 65th United States Coloured Infantries, many of whom, having learned to read and write in the army, recognised the importance of creating educational opportunities for newly emancipated African Americans after the war.

It’s difficult to imagine this handbill would’ve been printed in an edition of more than fifty copies, one for each of the thirty-five named officers plus a few more for interested parties.
