NEUMANN (Carl Friedrich).
Lehrsaal des Mittelreiches - Zhong-guo Xuetang.

The present work is the first translation into German of the San zi jing (Three character classic), which is regarded as a particularly useful primer for the study of Chinese characters. It was originally compiled in the 13th century and became a set text given to children at elementary school. The name derives from the fact that each sentence is written in groups of three characters. Furthermore it includes a translation of the Tang dynasty Daoist text “Chang qing jing jing” attributed to Laozi.

The German Sinologist Neumann (1793-1870) travelled to Canton and Macao in 1829, where he learned Chinese, and managed to form a collection of 12,000 Chinese titles. He became Professor of Armenian and Chinese at Munich University. Rare. Cordier 1412 & 1435; Walravens: China Illustrata. p. 76ff.
