SEMALLÉ (René de).
Les Indiens des États-Unis.
A LOVELY, CRISP COPY
A fine copy of this scarce work which is recorded just twice at auction in 1910 and 2020.
René de Semallé (1822-1894) was variously a geographer, translator and editor. His text is comprised of two articles which originally appeared in L’ Illustration and the Bulletin de la Société de Geographie both in 1868. While these articles discuss the evolution of Native populations in North America, especially their lifestyles, habits and customs. He considers the Potowatomi, Sioux, Mohawk, Apache and Cheyenne tribes and also notes their chivalry. Semallé also believed that the Native population was increasing rather than the reverse during this period.
These articles were written during the midst of the Civil War and Semallé does not shy away from citing some of the cruelties endured by Native Americans at the hands of settlers.
