First published in 1930 under the name she used after her first marriage Helen Ferguson, she would take her new name in 1940 from the protagonist in this novel, Anna Kavan. This, the first edition published by Peter Owen, who republished all of her earlier novels posthumously and has kept all her works in print to this day.
