Davie embarked on a trading voyage to Australia from New York in 1796, having previously travelled out from England some time earlier. His ship was blown off course however and forced to shelter in the river Plate before going on to Monte Video and Buenos Ayres to make repairs. It was here that the author was “seized by a dangerous disorder, which usually attacks Europeans upon their first landing in that country” and was unable to continue with the voyage. He was nursed back to health by Dominican friars. Davie was able to travel to the interior of Paraguay with one of the order, a father Hernandez. Sabin, 18747.
