[GREELY (Lieut. Adolphus).] &
TAUNTON IRON WORKS.
Lieut. Greeley Arrives at the North Pole.
This large trade card was used to advertise different stoves by the Taunton Iron Works. Referring to an almost identical example for the Shaker and New Tarriff Ranges, Dave Cheadle writes that it “probably dates to the years of excitement as America held its breath waiting for Greely’s return. The Greely party never reached the North Pole, but they did set a Farthest North record in 1882 that stood for 13 years.” The card includes nearly all the classic images associated with Arctic travel. The sole difference between the Shaker range and the Quaker range being advertised here is the small illustration to the stove door.
