The title-page states that “being written wholly by control of Spirits, without any volition or will by the Medium, or any thought or care in regard to the matter presented by his hand.”
Commencing with a set of rules for “persons desirous of becoming Mediums” which reads more like instructions. The twelve steps include sitting in silence for an hour each day; “concentrate the mind on the spirit from whom a communication is desired until the hand is moved”; “when the impression is made, the hand will be moved to write the word as it is impressed on the mind”; “when the medium is moved to write, one hour only in each day should be spent, until directed by the spirits.” This is followed by chapters on Miracles, Prophesy, Deceiving Spirits, Witchcraft, Wisdom, Works, Circles, Union in Marriages, Sins Against Spirits, Repentence, Forgiveness, Wisdom of Mediums, and A Narrative.
Not to be confused with the similarly-titled Light from the Spirit World: The Pilgrimage of Thomas Paine and Others to the Seventh Circle in the Spirit World, also published in 1852. This work precedes it.
