A lovely copy of this scarce little guide to keeping caged birds at home.
While people have been keeping caged birds for centuries, the natural history specimens brought back from the New World encouraged a trade in exotic pets. Beginning with an excerpt from Buffon on the training of birds (with notes on their intelligence), one hundred and fifteen birds are then described with many from as far afield as Canada, Guinea, Guyane, Haiti, Cuba, Mexico, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Botany Bay.
The description of each bird is not only physical but also notes its origin, migration patterns (where appropriate), and the best way to take care of them.
OCLC locates copies at Boston Athenaeum and Tulane, BnF, and one each in Berlin and Poland. A second edition appeared in 1842.
