William R. Pickles attended the Bradford Technical College in Yorkshire between 1883 and 1886, where he studied to become an engineer. The present book is Pickles’ manuscript for Advanced Steam, a book comprising of his notes from ‘Steam lessons at the B. T. C. Master Mr J. W. Smith’.
Though the book was never published, Pickles’ care and sense of intention is evidenced throughout. The notebook opens with various designs; Pickles made a mock-up for the title page, tested different styles of lettering for the text and made a sample trade card with his address, 6A Smith Lane. Also included is his name ink stamped in three places, along with a pencil sketch of man driving a steam train.
