The first separate appearance of Meade’s Nobel Memorial Lecture, delivered in Stockholm on 8 December 1977 and also printed in The Economic Journal. Meade was awarded the 1977 Nobel Prize ‘for his work on international trade as represented by the two volumes of his Theory of International Economic Policy (1951, 1955), which together have become the bible of every trade economist’ (Blaug). The text of Meade’s lecture was also published in the Economic Journal later in the same year.
