The three volumes published in 1755; as often, the set lacks vol. IV, only published in 1757.
Provenance: with the bookplate of George Grenville (1712-1770), brother-in-law of William Pitt (Pitt the Elder). Grenville served as prime minster to King George III between 1763 and 1765, in succession to the Earl of Bute. Grenville’s ministry was dogged by attempts to pay off the national debt built up during the Seven Years War/French and Indian War. He sought to bring the American colonies under closer parliamentary control in matters of taxation, and is best known for applying the existing Stamp Act to the thirteen colonies, an early and bitter grievance on the path to the Revolutionary War.
