SCORESBY (Rev. William).
Memorials of the Sea. My Father: Being records of the adventurous life of the late William Scoresby, Esq. of Whitby.
Two works by explorer and scientist William Scoresby. The first is an intimate biography of his father, celebrated Arctic navigator and whaler William Scoresby Sr. Scoresby began his navigation education joining his father on expeditions when he was only ten years old. The second work reflects Scoresby’s decision to abandon Arctic exploration and join the clergy. Though he refocused his attentions on the church, his enthusiasm for and involvement in the scientific community never waned, and he is best known for his observations surrounding terrestrial magnetism. The second edition of Sabbaths in the Arctic Regions… is devoted to proving the existence of providence while on the seas, specifically related to whaling expeditions. Here he illustrates how proper devotion and prayer on Sabbath can result in more favourable results at sea, and alternatively, how detrimental lack of observation can be.
