In May of 1930 Tokyo was humming: the great Kanto Earthquake seemed to be a distant memory, and the bars and clubs were full of revellers. Tokyo saw itself as the new New York, ero guro nansensu (erotic, grotesque, nonsense) dominated the newfound modernity in the metropolis, in photography shinko shashin (avant-garde photography) was all the rage, and the equivalent in literature was the New Art School (Shinko Geijutsu-ha) with twelve of the finest modern writers getting together to expound the New Modern Spirit.
The present book features a collection of short stories, starting with Kawabata Yasunari’s ‘Red Gang of Asakusa’ where he experimented with Western-style literature.
