Engen identifies the character of Marcia in this autobiographical novel as based on Clemence Housman: “Tm too strong for my sex… There are so many things I can do, and mayn’t. It never strikes a man, I suppose, what a prison this is? You don’t want to thread needles, and darn stockings, or wear your hair long; all things you could do if you wished.
