A beautiful book published for the Christmas market; its illustrations by Wyndham Payne (who would shortly afterwards achieve fame as the illustrator of The Wind in the Willows (1927)), printed handsomely in red, green, black, mustard yellow, and gold-brown.
“The Beaumont Press published exquisite books with decorative boards” (Matthew Chambers (University of Warsaw), ‘The Modernist Bookshops of Charing Cross Road’ in The Modernist Review (4 November 2022)). Beaumont’s bookshop was at 75 Charing Cross Road, and was one of a slew of bookshops that cropped up in the area in the early 20th century. Beaumont taught himself to set type and print books, acquiring a printing press that he operated in the basement of his shop.
Spine and boards slightly muted/dulled in places, with some edge-wear. Some scattered foxing internally, particularly half-title, still an attractive copy.
