The list of subscribers indicates that only 279 copies were printed. Provenance: this copy bears the inscription “Charles Ernest Hodgkin from John Hodgkin, March 14 1904” and a further pencilled inscription “Presented to me by Eliot Hodgkin, London, Oct. 15th, 1980. John Brinton.”

Thomas Hodgkin (1798-1866) was a member of the Society of Friends and a physician at Guy’s Hospital in London who devoted much of his life to philanthropic works, though he is most well-known today for the lymphoma named after him. This trip to Morocco in 1864 was organised by one of the subscribers to the book, the renowned philanthropist Sir Moses Montefiore. The work was published following the death of the author in Jerusalem whilst on another mission with Sir Moses.
