Having spent much of his early life in the Navy, the peace of 1814 enabled Cochrane to undertake a journey on foot through France, Portugal and Spain. On his return in 1820 he offered his services to the admiralty with a view to exploring the Niger, however he failed to gain support for his plans and decided to travel arround the world, by way of Russia. However, on reaching Kamtchatka he married a local woman and promptly returned to England.
