As Captain of the Oswego, Paddock claimed that his was the first U.S. ship to have been wrecked on the Barbary Coast. He was held captive by Arabs before eventually being ransomed at Mogadore from where he made his way back to America. His Preface is followed by a series of testimonials including those from a Judge of the Supreme Court of the State of New York and the Mayor of Albany.

This edition was preceded by the American, also published in 1818.
