Published to accompany Joseph des Barres’ chart of the same year, the survey work carried out by Callendar on HMS Romney was part of a larger project to establish a proper understanding of the east coast of North America, revealed as inadequate during the Seven Years War.
HMS Romney arrived in Boston in 1768 as part of the British effort to enforce the Townsend Acts, which set a long train of events resulting in the 1770 Boston massacre. As such, Callendar’s survey gives us a snapshot of Boston as it was at the very outset of the Revolutionary War. The improvement was so significant that the resultant map and pamphlet was used by both sides.
Rare. The only copy we find at auction was at Swann in 1991. Sabin, 10061.
