A fine large-format wall-map of the world, engraved (and probably drawn) by John Crane Dower (ca. 1791-1847), for the English cartographic publisher, Henry Teesdale (1776-1855).
This was one of the largest format maps published by Teesdale; it was first published in 1836 and reprinted frequently thereafter, this being the sixth of eleven recorded states, although there were almost certainly many more states that cannot now be found.
Teesdale was diligent in keeping the map up-to-date, as far as possible, and a number of notations across the face of the map show the care taken. Most significantly, ‘Texas’ is shown as a republic, coloured separately from Mexico, with a faint dotted line border marked, with the notation ‘TEXAS was acknowledged an Independent State by England, Novr. 1840.’ In the western Pacific is the notation, ‘Chatham I. Discovered by Lieu.t Broughton 1795, and Colonized by the New Zealand Company May 1841.’ Due south of South Africa are marked the discoveries of ‘Captn. D’Urville 1840’ on the coast of Antarctica, and south of New Zealand the comment ’Capt. Ross and Crozier discovered Land on the 10th Jany. 1840 in Lat. 71o 56“ Long. E. 171o 17“ and took possession on the 12th in the name of Her Majesty. This Land extends S. to 79, on the 28th a large Volcano was seen in Lat. 77o 31“ Long E. 171o 30“.
The sea is crisscrossed with mariner’s tracks, most notably those of Captain Cook, but also any number of other expeditions before him and after him; also included are number of comments relating to the Mutiny on the Bounty, with the Bounty’s route to Pitcairn Island, where the mutineers settled.
