DOWER (John Crane).
A New General Atlas of Modern Geography, comprised in Fifty Maps ... New Edition ...
Rare world atlas, compiled by John Crane Dower (ca.1791-1847), an important London-based engraved and mapmaker.
This atlas presents some bibliographic confusion; while described as a ‘New Edition’ we have been unable to find an earlier printing, or indeed a comparable example of this edition. The atlas was probably first produced about 1835, with this second printing following fairly shortly after. The atlas then underwent a revision in about 1840-2, depicting Texas as a separate state and updating the delineation of Australia.
The front paste-down bears the bookseller’s label of [Henry] Oldland of Bristol, said to have flourished 1842-1851 (BBTI).
