A New Port in Antarctica.

ONE LAST JOB

Silver gelatine photograph measuring 200 by 260mm. Ms. number “A69”, ink stamps, and typed carbon caption on official expedition stationery laid down to verso. A little cockled, but very good. In an archival mount. [Melbourne?], 1930.

£450.00

A lovely image taken by Frank Hurley on during Douglas Mawson’s B.A.N.Z. Antarctic Expedition, 1929-31. Both Hurley and Mawson had distinguished themselves through the Heroic Age. This was the final Antarctic expedition for them both, appropriately sailing on that other stalwart of Antarctic exploration, Discovery.

The long title of the photograph reads: “A New Port In Antarctica. Looking west over the islet-studded waters of Proclamation Harbor recently discovered by the B.A.N.Z. Expedition. In the background, the coastal ice-slopes of Enderby Land.” The caption declines to mention the thousands of penguins in the foreground.

The main result of this expedition was a territorial claim: the Australian Antarctic Territory and it was at Proclamation Harbour that Mawson planted the Australian flag. It was a fitting culmination of the careers of the two Australian polar veterans.

This print was issued for press purposes. It was distributed by the Herald Feature Service, Melbourne, and stamped May 13, 1930. The B.A.N.Z. stationery notes that this is an official photograph by Frank Hurley and must be acknowledged as such.
