SERMONS BY AN AFRO-PORTUGUESE PRIEST, AN IMPORTANT FIGURE IN 17TH C BRAZIL
In 1614, the Afro-Portuguese priest, Antonio Vieria (1608-1697), moved with his family from Lisbon to Bahia where he was educated as a Jesuit, commencing his novitiate in 1625 and entering the priesthood a decade later. In 1640 he was appointed Royal Preacher and tutor to the Infante Dom Pedro.
He became a vital figure in seventeenth-century Brazil, assisting the War and Navy departments, advocating for the enslaved and Indigenous Americans, serving as a diplomat, and is best known for his oratory skills. This is the eleventh volume of his sermons, spanning the years 1684-88.
Scarce, the work is held in a handful of institutions but auction records list just two copies in 1978 and 1982.
