STIMMER'S SUPERB PORTRAITS OF THE POPES
First edition of this controversial history of the Papacy, written by the Lutheran theologian Georg Nigrinus (1530-1602) who was renowned “one of the vilest polemicists of his century” (cf. Goedeke) who attacked Catholics, Calvinists and Jews with great vigour.
Stimmer’s superb portraits of the 27 popes from Urban VI to Gregory XIII were first used by Jobin in 1573, in Onophrio Panvinio’s Accurate effigies pontificum maximorum with three additional portraits of the three first Popes, Peter, Linus and Anaclet.
A little toned throughout, endpapers dusty.
